Introduction of Nano Convergence Engineering Department

The Purpose of Education

Main Purpose

 • The Purpose of EducationTraining future professionals for high-tech study, which involves the fusion of nano materials, printing materials, printing electronics, and biological printing engineering
 • Educating engineers in nano printing to allow them to contribute in various means, such as research, education, business, and overseas activities.
 • Acquisition of an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) certified dual degree program (Printing Nano Engineering, PNE) with the University of Texas (UT) System.
 • Provide for the availability of related educational opportunities and the expansion of overseas employment

Specific Goals

 • Tuition for this arrangement is within 30% of the average tuition for other institutions in the United States and 50% of that in state universities. The American bachelor’s of science, engineering degree certified by ABET will be issued for the first time in South Korea.
 • Development of creative ability by combining basic engineering principles and nano science.
 • Opportunities to become a bilingual (English-Korean) or trilingual (English-Korean-Spanish) engineer
 • Supply practical educational, experimental, and research conditions to eventually perform field work with related companies, laboratories, and associations.
 • Training in the basic abilities of writing papers, journals, announcements of international conferences, patents, and proposals.

About Dual Degree Program

Operation of the dual degree program (SKU-UTEP Dual Degree Program) through an agreement between the Metallurgical & Materials Engineering (MME) Department at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) and the Nano Convergence Engineering Department at SeoKyeong University (SKU).

Program Name

SKU-UTEP Dual Degree Program Dual degree program of Metallurgical & Materials Engineering (MME) and Printable Nano Engineering (PNE)

Program Introduction

This program allows students to earn an ABET-certified degree jointly between SKU and UTEP.

Purpose of the Program

 1. Development of various printed electronic materials and print technology.
 2. Development of printed electronics equipment and applications.
 3. Development of multilingual students capable of working at the global scale.
 • Printed Electronicsk
 • Gold Nano Ink
 • Nano Particle Packing

Requirements for the Dual Degree

 1. Students attend SKU for the first five semesters learning fundamental concepts and principles of engineering and cultural education.
 2. Students subsequently attend UTEP for three semesters, majoring in MME, PNE concentration.
 3. When transferring from SKU to UTEP, students shall obtain an F1 student visa after achieving a TOEFL score greater than PBT 520.
 4. After completing the credit requirements at UTEP (128 credit hours), students will be issued an American bachelor’s of science degree in MME, certified by ABET, if a graduating examination is passed.
 5. After completing the credit requirements at SKU, students will be issued a bachelor’s of engineering degree from SKU.
 6. Requirements for acquiring the dual degree between SKU and UTEP

Support and Benefits of the PNE Program

Scholarship
 • Students having a GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale or who submitted or published a scientific journal paper as the first author are eligible to receive a scholarship from the Texas state government (in-state fees) as the UTEP Matching Grant of SKU-UTEP Educational Research Grant (50% of total tuition fees at UTEP).
 • Business scholarships from the Korea Printed Electronics Research Association (KoPERA), the Korea Printed Electronics Association (KoPEA), scholarships from SKU, and various grants encouraging research at UTEP will be considered and supported.
 • Student research supporting funds for students studying Printing Nano Engineering (PNE) and Urban Mining (UM) in the Metallurgical & Materials Engineering Department at UTEP. (P.I.: Dr. Namsoo Peter Kim)
 • As of November of 2011, seven undergraduate students and two graduate students from either the United States or South Korea receive $800-1,400 per month, per person, as a scholarship.
 • The above scholarships can be awarded in full and the specific scholarship student selection and pay standard are dependent on individual regulation.
Awarding the ABET-certified Dual Degree
 • If the requirements for acquiring the dual degree are satisfied, the bachelor’s degree from both SKU and UTEP will be awarded.
 • After completing the credit requirements at UTEP (128 credit hours), students will be issued an American bachelor’s of science degree in MME, certified by ABET, if a graduating examination is passed.
